DES MOINES, Iowa--The Drake women's track and field team finished off a very busy weekend
on Saturday during the final day of the Drake Relays.
The sprint medley relay
team of senior Cambria Pardner
(Aurora, Colo.) sophomore Marissa Smith
(Ajax, Ontario), and the senior tandem of Beth Hamling (Council Bluffs, Iowa) and Kara McCartney (Elgin, Iowa) registered a 10th-place showing clocking in at
3:58.01. The squad said that the home crowd helped them down the stretch.
"When you usually run you
don't hear the crowd," commented McCartney. "When you run the 800 you have a
little more time to take it all in. Down the home stretch all I heard were
Drake chants."
"I was really proud of the
girls," commented head coach Natasha Brown. "It's an event we usually don't do, so I was really pleased. They
had very good splits that would qualify as personal bests and they gave it all
they could. It was great and the crowd was into it."
Senior Casey McDermott (Newton, Iowa) was 14th
in the 1500 crossing the line in 4:15.15.
In the triple jump,
Pardner leapt 38 feet 5.50 inches.
Drake will stay in-state
next Saturday (May 7) when they compete in the Messersmith Invitational in
Cedar Falls, Iowa.
