Bulldogs Split MVC Doubleheader at Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. – The Drake University softball team split its Saturday doubleheader at Wichita State, winning the opener, 8-3, and falling in game two, 9-6. The loss was Drake's first Missouri Valley Conference setback of the season and moved the team's record to 23-13 overall and 9-1 in the MVC.

Freshman Amy Pierce (Olathe, Kan.) turned in a huge day at the plate, finishing a combined 6-for-9 with three runs scored and three RBI. Pierce slapped three hits in both games, including a seventh-inning, two-run home run in game two. The freshman has tallied a hit in 10-straight contests and leads the Bulldogs with a .370 batting average – up nearly 100 points in the last two weeks. Pierce is hitting an even .500 (18-for36) during the streak.

Senior Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) earned the win in the opener, her team-best 12th of the season. DeLong allowed two earned runs on four hits and struck out five to lead Drake to the 8-3 victory. Her five strikeouts gave her 660 in her career, just 10 short of the all-time Drake record.

Senior Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn.) held Wichita State's offense in-check through 6.2 innings in game two, but ceded four runs on three hits to the Shockers with one out to go in the game. Wichita State's seventh-inning effort sent the game to the eighth inning, where the Shockers won on a walk-off three-run shot by sophomore right fielder Danika Miller. Dordel fell to 10-8 on the season with her first loss since March 15 at Pacific. The senior previously had earned in win in seven-straight appearances.

The Drake offense continued its powerful streak in conference games, tallying 23 hits, including six doubles and four homers, during the doubleheader. Senior catcher Erin Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill.) slammed her seventh home run of the season in game one, keeping pace with junior Torey Craddock (Tucson, Ariz.), who also hit her seventh in the opener. The pair ranks second on the team in the category, two behind DeLong's team-high nine.

The Bulldogs wrap up their three-game series at Wichita State Sunday at noon.
