DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake softball (25-27, 14-10 MVC)
team opened its final homestand of the year sweeping Nebraska Omaha (23-16, 3-3
GWC) in a midweek doubleheader, topping the Mavericks, 1-0 and 5-0.
Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) started the first
game of the evening for the Bulldogs and picked up her 17th win of the season.
The sophomore scattered eight hits in seven innings in the circle and notched
five strikeouts.
Hayley Nybo (Minnetonka, Minn.) scored the only
run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning by blasting her team-leading
eighth home run of the season over the centerfield fence to put the Bulldogs on
top, 1-0.
Coming off
a strong weekend performance, freshman Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) started the second game and earned her
eighth win. Schmidt pitched another complete game gem allowing three hits and she
recorded six strikeouts. Schmidt helped her cause at the plate, batting 1-for-2
and scoring a run.
Senior Jaimie Duffek (Brookfield, Ill.) scored
the first run of the second game by beating a throw home from the pitcher after
a well-placed bunt by freshman Sarah Ryan (Mount Vernon, Iowa) in the fifth inning. Sophomore Amy Pierce (Olathe, Kan.) increased the
Drake lead to, 3-0, later in the inning after her triple drove in two runs.
Pierce is tied for first in the Missouri Valley Conference in triples, with
four this year. Drake added two more runs in the sixth inning to close out the
Mavericks, 5-0.
Drake will
host Wichita State this weekend and honor its seniors, Torey Craddock (Tucson, Ariz.), Rose Magaddino (Tucson, Ariz.) and Duffek, in their final home games
of their collegiate careers. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is 12 p.m.
