NORMAL, Ill. – Led by senior
Hadley Jennings (Trenton, Mo.), the Drake women's golf team opened its fall campaign with a 36-hole total of 623 (300-323) at the Redbird Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 8) at the D.A. Weibring Golf Course.
Jennings carded rounds of 72 and 79 for the Bulldogs to stand tied for 20th with a two-round score of 151, while as a team, Drake is 12th among 14 teams.
"I'm really proud of our first-round effort," Bulldog head coach Leanne Smith commented. "It has been a long three years of not having everyone healthy and I'm excited that we came out and played well. Arianna (Gastelum) and Sarah (Browning) really hung in there for us with it being their first 36-hole day and the temperatures being so warm. I'm excited to see what we can do tomorrow after we get some rest."
Junior Danielle Brooks (Red Wing, Minn.) and redshirt sophomore Kimmy Askelson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) are tied for 44th place after shooting identical 157 totals. Brooks went 74-83, while Askelson, in her first competition since last fall, posted scores of 76 and 81.
In their first competition as collegiate golfers, freshmen Arianna Gastelum (Chula Vista, Calif.) and Sarah Browning (Midhurst, Ontario) are tied for 53rd and 66th, respectively. The duo registered 36-hole marks of 159 and 162.
Playing as an individual, junior Ashley Brooks (Red Wing, Minn.) opened with an 87 on the opening 18 holes before shooting a career-low 80 over the final 18 holes.
Competition at the Redbird Invitational concludes on Monday (Sept. 9) beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
