Cross Country Races Some Of The Nation?s Best At The Griak Invitational

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. – The Drake University cross country teams competed against some of the top programs in the country Saturday afternoon at the annual Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota. Both the men's and women's races featured more than 30 teams, including 10 nationally ranked programs, with the Bulldog men's team coming in 27th and women 34th.

"Times across the board were slow due to the tough conditions," said Drake head coach Dan Hostager. "But I'm pleased with our teams' effort as it will pay off in October. We're really looking forward to having both squads at full strength next month."

Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa) returned to racing following a three-week hiatus to train and was the men's team's top finished in 29th place with an 8-kilometer time of 25:38.9 in the 301-runner field. Rob McCann (Mississauga, Ontario) crossed next for the Bulldogs in 90th with a 26:21.8 finish followed by Doug Brady (Englewood, Colo) in 178th at 27:20.9. Missing two of its top runners due to injury, the men's lineup was bolster by a pair of freshman that rounded out the scoring with Chris Kaminski (New Lenox, Ill.) and Isaiah Vlasek (Walford, Iowa) coming in 241st and 251st, respectively.

For the second-straight week, the women's team was led by Krista Maguire (Wausau, Wis.) who finished 161st of the 6-kilometer course with a time of 23:42.9. The exceptionally deep, 390-runner, women's field featured three top-10 programs to provide the Bulldogs with plenty of tough competition. Taylor Scholl (Prior Lake, Minn.) was the second Bulldog across the line in 208th place and a time of 24:14.2 with Emma Huston (Des Moines, Iowa) trailing in 220th place thanks to a time of 24:18.2. Mariah Kauder (Cascade, Iowa) and Cassie Aerts (David City, Neb.) were 260th and 274th to complete Drake's scoring.

The teams begin their incredibly challenging October schedule Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Chile Pepper Festival, hosted by the University of Arkansas.
