AMES, Iowa – Drake University senior Emma Huston (Des Moines, Iowa) shattered the indoor school record in the 5,000 meters Friday night at the Iowa State Classic.

Huston's time of 16:17.30 eclipsed the previous indoor record by more than 27 seconds to finish 10th in the extremely talented field the included competitors from Notre Dame, Stanford, Kansas, Wisconsin and Alabama.

"It's great to see Emma get our school record," said Drake University distance coach Dan Hostager. "That record has been on the books for more than 15 years and this will serve her well heading into our conference championship and the outdoor season."

Huston's performance bested the previous record of 16:44.32 set by Tracey Bearden in 2000. The senior now ranks in the top-seven in three events for the Bulldogs as earlier this season she ran the third-fastest 3,000 meters (9:37.89) and the fourth-fastest mile (4:50.70) in program history.

In the men's races, Reed Fischer (Minnetonka, Minn.) almost etched his name in the Drake record book in the 3,000 meters with a huge personal best of 8:06.88. That performance was just 0.44 seconds off the 16-year-old school record in the event. Fischer finished 19th in another deep, talented field.

"That's another older record, so Reed's performance is a great sign for what's ahead for him," Hostager added.

Kayla Bell (Bolingbrook, Ill.) also continued her strong indoor season for the Bulldogs by winning the long jump with a jump of 19-0.75.

Competition for the Bulldogs continues Saturday at 10 a.m. at ISU's Lied Recreation Center.
