DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University track and field teams closed out the 40th annual Jim Duncan Invitational by winning 10 events on Saturday, April 16.
Pierce Vincent (Fayetteville, Ga.) accounted for two of those wins with first-place showings in the men's 100 and 200 meters in 10.95 and 21.95, respectively. His 200-meter effort came against a 6.4 m/s headwind as Pierce and the Bulldogs faced strong southerly winds all day despite otherwise perfect conditions.
"We won the events we should win, but it was hard with the conditions today to record fast times," said Drake head coach Natasha Kaiser-Brown. "I'm proud of our efforts today and it was a beautiful, but windy day, which makes it tough."
In the 100 meters, Vincent led the 1-2-3-4 finish with Demetrius Shelton (Markham, Ill.), Aaron Chier (Belgium, Wis.) and Kendall Owens (Carrollton, Texas) following. Owens and Chier also finished in the top 10 of the 200 meters.
Rai Ahmed-Green (Irvine, Calif.) led the women's sprinters to similar success as she won the 200 meters in 25.54 and was second in the 100 meters in 12.56. Taryn Rolle (Nassau, The Bahamas) and Mary Young (Urbandale, Iowa) finished fourth and fifth in the 100 meters while Kaylen Rettig (Allen, Texas.) was fourth in the 200 meters.
Young also took second in the 400-meter hurdles as the Drake women's sprinters swept the hurdles. Destani Welch (Des Moines, Iowa) claimed top honors in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.38 with Virginia Hill (Haymarket, Va.) cruising to first in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:00.76.
In the men's hurdles, Hudson Priebe (Chamberlain, S.D.) was third overall and the second collegiate men's finisher in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.30, followed by Bas Van Leersum (Zaandam, Netherlands) in fourth. Their coach, LaRon Bennett, won the event in 52.23.
Drake's distance events on Saturday were highlighted by Robert McCann (Mississauga, Ontario) winning the 1,500 meters in 3:54.88 in his first 1,500-meter race of the season.
The Bulldogs also had a duo of winners in the field events on Saturday with Christina LeMunyon (Overland Park, Kan.) winning the pole vault by clearing 10-11.75 and Kayla Bell (Bolingbrook, Ill.) winning the triple jump with a leap of 39-3.25 in front of the home crowd at the Blue Oval.
"It's always fun to compete at home and this is always a fan-friendly meet for us, but going into the next series of meets, they get harder," Kaiser-Brown said. "We're entering into the championship season phase of our training and as we compete in the Drake Relays, the conference meet and hopefully send more athletes to regionals."
The Bulldogs are set to compete next weekend at the Kansas Relays and the Musco Twilight in Iowa City, Iowa.
