Bell Takes 10th In Long Jump On Friday at the Drake Relays

Senior to compete in the triple jump on Saturday.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake University senior Pierce Vincent (Fayetteville, Ga.) recorded the fastest time of the day in the preliminary heats of the men's university division 100 meters on Friday at the 107th Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee.

Vincent outraced the field with a time of 10.26 to win his heat and advance to Saturday's finals. If not for a 3.4 m/s tailwind, Vincent's time would have registered as the second fastest in school history.

"I wanted to just get to Saturday. I was focused on the start and came out well and it came together for me," Vincent said. "I feel like I'm at a good point, I've been working my butt off all year and the results are showing. I'm ready to go faster each time and I'm going to try to keep it up."

That performance was part of a busy day for the sprinter as he anchored the team's 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays. The latter finished fourth in 1:25.70 to rack up Hy-Vee Cup points. He was joined in that effort by Kendall Owens, Demetrius Shelton and Aaron Chier.

The women's team's efforts were highlighted by Kayla Bell (Bolingbrook, Ill.) finishing 10th in the long jump with a mark of 19-1.5.

Virginia Hill (Haymarket, Va.) also turned in a top-10 performance with a 59.44 finish in the 400-meter hurdles to take 10th place.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday for the final day of the Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee. At 2:25 p.m. Vincent will aim to become the first Bulldog to become a Relays champion in the sprints since 1990 when he steps into the blocks for the 100-meter finals.

Saturday's action will be broadcast via USATF.tv while NBC Sports Network will televise the action live from 2-4 p.m.
