OMAHA, Neb. - The Drake University women's golf team improved by two strokes with another strong round, but fell one spot on the leaderboard during the final day of the 36-hole Creighton Classic. The Bulldogs finished with a 307 Tuesday to complete the two-day event at 309-307 – 616.
"As a team, our last two rounds have been the best of the season so far," said Drake head coach
Rachael Pruett. "Relative to par ,we played better than we have all season and it stings to take third place after being in second after the first round. As well as we did, we simply got outplayed by South Dakota and UNI."
The Bulldogs finished three strokes behind second-place South Dakota, who had the best score of the second day at 302. UNI won the event at 297-305 – 602.
Sigurlaug Jonsdottir (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) led the Bulldogs for the second-straight day to post a 37-37 – 74 on the par-73 layout. Jonsdottir had two birdies on the front nine and played a flawless back nine to finish the event tied for fourth at 76-74 – 150.
Sam Paulak (Kansas City, Mo.) followed her first-round 77 to post a 38-38 – 76 and finish the tournament tied for seventh at 153. She was tied with teammate Kristen Giles (Burlington, Ontario) who had a strong showing competing as an individual, moving up seven spots on the final day with a 74 to finish in a tie for seventh place at 79-74 – 153.
Grace Dunn (Brookfield, Wis.) carded another round in the 70s, finishing with a 39-40 – 79 to settle into a tie for 11th overall with a 78-79 – 157. Haeri Lee (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Erica Olberding (Des Moines, Iowa) finished with an 81 and 79, respectively, for the Bulldogs Tuesday.
"Our team has a deep roster and we will keep competing and pushing each other to be better," Pruett added. "I know we can be competitive in the MVC Preview and I am excited to see how we fair against all MVC teams."
The Creighton Classic was the Bulldogs' next-to-last fall event as the team takes the next two weeks to prepare for the MVC Fall Preview Oct. 14-16.
