MINNEAPOLIS – The 49th-ranked Drake University men's tennis team suffered a 6-1 setback to Penn Saturday at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
The Quakers managed to win the doubles point as they took courts No. 3 and No. 1, respectively. The Bulldogs did win a doubles match with
Finley Hall and
Ben Wood coming out on top over Josh Pompan and Nichola Westergaard, 6-3, at No. 2.
In singles, Penn used a pair of straight sets win on courts No. 6 and No. 4, respectively, to take a 3-0 lead.
Pompan clinched the Quaker victory with a 6-2, 7-6 win over
Tom Hands at No. 2.
Vinny Gillespie tallied the Bulldog's lone point with his 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win over Kyle Mautner at No. 1 singles.
Hall and
Barny Thorold each won their first set but ultimately fell in three sets at No. 5 and No. 3, respectively.
The Bulldogs' month-long road trip continues next weekend as they head to the Hoosier state to square off against Indiana and Purdue.
