Rowing Closes Spring Training Against Conference Foes

The Drake University rowing team ended its week of spring training in Florida against a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents Saturday morning on Beresford Lake in DeLand, Fla.

DELAND, Fla. – The Drake University rowing team ended its week of spring training in Florida against a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents Saturday morning on Beresford Lake in DeLand, Fla.

Drake, which started spring break with a few days in Tuscaloosa, Ala., moved to Florida for the rest of the week and closed against Jacksonville and Stetson in four races. The Bulldogs had 2nd varsity 8+, varsity 8+, varsity 4+ and 2nd varsity 4+ boats compete against MAAC foes. Drake was led by its varsity 8+ boat that took second with a time of 07:28.75 in its race behind Jacksonville (07:22.94) and defeated Stetson (:07:35.63).

"I'm really happy how we did today," said Drake head coach Charlie DiSilvestro. "Jacksonville is the multiple time conference champs and I felt we hung very well coming off a tough week of spring training. For us to come on spring break with no actual rowing before this trip I'm really proud of how the team performed."

Drake, which has been unable to practice on the water in Des Moines due to a harsh winter and then high water on the Des Moines River, had a good week of water time and off the water experiences during its trip. The Bulldogs will compete next on April 6 when they travel to face rival Creighton.

"This week off the water we came together as a family," DiSilvestro said. "Being a family and being to support each other during a difficult week of training. They picked each other up and supported each other during tough times. They all went and out and give their best effort performed well today. We did really good against some stiff competition in Jacksonville and Stetson."
