Four Bulldogs Earn Summit League Men’s Tennis Honors

Drake ties for the league lead in honors

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University men's tennis team placed a league-high four student-athletes on the All-Summit League Team, the Summit League announced Thursday, April 25, night prior to the start of the league's championship.

Ben Clark, Vinny Gillespie, and Tom Hands were named to the All-Summit League Team for the second-consecutive year. Calum MacGeoch was also named to the team after redshirting last season. All four Bulldogs are seniors and all received All-MVC honors in 2016-17, prior to Drake joining the Summit League.

Hands won a team-high 18 singles matches in dual competitions, including two wins over nationally ranked opponents. Hands was nationally ranked for several weeks, reaching as high as No. 64.

Gillespie earned three Summit League Athlete of the Week awards and posted a singles record of 17-9 in dual events. Gillespie went 15-13 in doubles matches and ranked as high as No. 27 with his doubles partner Barny Thorold.

MacGeoch had a team-high 17 doubles wins including a 5-1 record in conference play. Over a stretch of 11 doubles matches, MacGeoch and his doubles partner Tom Hands lost just one match.

Clark was a perfect 6-0 in league singles matches and went 2-1 in doubles play. Clark finished the season with momentum, winning nine of his last 12 singles matches with one match unfinished.

The Bulldogs tied league regular-season champion Denver for the most all-league selections.

Drake begins competition at the Summit League Championship in Tulsa, Okla., Friday evening against Valparaiso. The match is set to start at 6 p.m.
