Track & Field Sets Another School Record And Gets More Than A Dozen PRs At Cyclone Open

Yinka Ajayi sets the school record in the women's 200 meters for the second-straight week.

AMES, Iowa - The Drake University track and field teams had another record-setting Saturday at the Cyclone Open with a school record in the women's 200 meters and four other performances that rank on Drake's top-10 list.

The Bulldogs also recorded more than a dozen personal bests in their second indoor meet of the season competing against teams from Iowa State and UNI.

For the second-straight week, newcomer Yinka Ajayi made history in the women's 200 meters by breaking her own school record in the event. Her first record lasted just seven days before she bested it by nearly two-tenths of a second to win the event in 24.44.

Also in the sprints, Victor Peka won both the men's 60 and 200 meters. He finished the 200 meters in 21.51, a time that ranks fifth on Drake's top-10 list. He finished the 60 meters in 6.96. Keaton Kester took second in the women's 60 meters with a personal best time of 7.81m.

The throws crew also made history for the second-straight week as both Joey Harkins and Ethan Marshall turned in big personal bests in the weight throw. Harkins added more than a foot to his personal best with a throw of 58-8.50 (17.89m) to finish third. Harkins mark now ranks as the third best on Drake's top-10 list.

Marshall finished sixth in the event with a personal best throw of 49.6.5 (15.10m), a mark that ranks fifth in Drake's history.

The distance events also yielded significant personal bests. Adam Fogg won his second 1,000 meters in as many weeks and shaved more than two seconds off his previous best time with a finish of 2:26.65. That performance moved the newcomer up to seventh on Drake's top-10 list.

In the women's mile, both Olivia Rogers and Millie Bretl shaved more than seven seconds off their personal bests in the event to finish third and fourth, respectively. Rogers finished in 5:05.65, followed closely by Bretl in 5:07.86. Elizabeth Aho also turned in a personal best with a time of 5:11.10 to finish sixth.

In the men's mile, both Xavier Lechleitner and Rylee Miller collected personal bests. Freshman Isaac Basten finished second in the event in 4:12.70 in his first collegiate mile. Running indoors for the first time, Maximilian Fridrich was 10th in 4:22.71.

The weekend opened with a pair of pole vaulters splitting from the main squad to compete at the Jack Jennett Invitational Friday evening at UNI. Newcomer and school record holder Maja Gebauer was second with a jump of 12-1.5 (3.70m) in the women's competition. Erik Olson took sixth in the men's field with a clearance of 13-11.25 (4.25m).

Following back-to-back record-setting weekends to open the season, the Bulldogs will train through two weeks before their next competition, Feb. 7-8, at the Husker Invite.
