Ajayi and Basten Win Titles On Final Day of MVC Indoor Championship

Bulldogs win three total individual titles at indoor championship.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Drake University's Isaac Basten and Yinka Ajayi both won individual titles on the second and final day of the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship Sunday at the UNI-Dome.

Ajayi began the day with a win in the women's 400 meters in 54.39 to best the field by more than a second in her first MVC Championship. Her title was just the third women's 400-meter win in program history and first since 1984. She also returned to the track to anchor the Bulldogs' 4x400-meter relay that took fifth.

Basten, a freshman, chased down the lead pack in the men's 3,000 meters and made his move with 300 meters left to power past a senior from Loyola, Riley DeMeulenaere, and use his kick to create nearly two seconds of separation at the finish line. For his efforts, Basten was named the MVC Championship Freshman of the Year.

Basten's win, the fifth-ever by a Bulldog in the 3,000 meters, completed a sweep of the men's long-distance events for the Bulldogs as Maximilian Fridrich won the 5,000 meters Friday night. It is the third time in the last six years Drake has swept the events and first by two different athletes.

Earlier in the day, another newcomer, Adam Fogg, took second in the mile in 4:21.22 to continue his breakout season.

In the women's distance events, Millie Bretl finished seventh in the 3,000 meters by winning her heat in 10:06.02 to score out of the traditionally slower first heat of the timed finals. 

Drake's lone field competitor of the day also made waves as sophomore Chandler Haight broke the women's school record in the shot put to finish seventh. Her mark of 47-1.5 (14.36m) broke the previous record by nearly a foot and was a personal best by nearly two feet.

Drake's sprinters also earned points with Sophia Jackson taking fourth in the 60 meters with a time of 7.71. Victor Peka finished sixth in the 200 meters with a personal best of 21.49, the fifth-fastest time on Drake's all-time list. Peka also ran the opening leg of the men's 4x400-meter relay that took fourth in 3:19.87.

In the team standings, Drake's men finished sixth out of nine teams while the women were seventh out of 10 teams. UNI won the men's team title and Illinois State claimed its third-straight women's title.
