The Drake University track and field teams are gearing up for their second competition of the 2021 indoor season at Iowa State University Saturday, January 23 for the annual Cyclone Open.
The Bulldogs are slated to compete against Iowa State and Missouri. No spectators will be allowed at the competition, hosted at ISU's Lied Recreation Center.
The Bulldogs are looking to capitalize on their 16 top-5 performances from last weekend's season opener at the South Dakota Invitational.
"After a solid opener in South Dakota with an limited group of student-athletes, we are excited to turn our focus and welcome a number of new faces back to the track at Iowa State," said Drake track & field head coach
Asha Gibson. "This weekend, a host of athletes will compete for the first time as Bulldogs, while many will welcome their first competition since late last February."
"Overall, each area has a host of newcomers who are adapting very well and gaining strength and momentum," Gibson added. "We look to upperclassmen such as
Elizabeth Aho and Ryan Schweitzer to lead on the distance side,
Chandler Haight and
Joey Harkins to build on their strong openers in the shot put and weight throw, respectively, and Yinka Ajayi and
Victor Peka to have strong starts in the 200 meters."
Field events start Saturday at noon with the weight throw followed by Shot Put. Running events begin at 1 p.m. with the 60m hurdles.
