Drake University senior
Cloud Masibhera claimed his fourth Missouri Valley Conference title by winning the men's long jump Saturday evening at the MVC Championship in Carbondale, Ill. Masibhera won the event on his fifth jump with a mark of 24-1.75 (7.36m) to add to his trophy collection.
Previously, Masibhera won the outdoor triple jump in 2019, the indoor triple jump in 2021 and the indoor long jump in 2018. His four MVC titles are the most by a Drake jumper in program history.
In the throws, Kessler improved upon his school record in the shot put with a throw of 65-4 (19.91m) as he finished second in his first MVC Championship as a Bulldog.
Previously this season, Kessler shattered the 29-year-old school record in the event and his performance Saturday extended that record by nearly three feet. His record-setting came on his final throw, but he could not move past Darius King of UNI's mark of 65-10.5 (20.08m).
Those two finishes in the few final events contested Saturday helped the Drake men enter Sunday's final day of competition in third place in the team standings.
In addition to Masibhera and Kessler's podium finishes,
Brooke Mullins scored for the women and bettered her school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The freshman finished fifth in 10:33.50, shaving six seconds off her previous best and school record.
Millie Bretl also scored in the event, finishing seventh in her first-ever steeplechase race.
Those scoring performances headlined a day where eight other Bulldogs qualified for Sunday's finals in their respective events.
Gal Arad (100m),
Yinka Mary Ajayi (400m),
Busiwa Asinga (400mH) and
David Olowookere (400mH) had the fastest qualifying times in their events.
Drake qualifiers were also bolstered by Briandria Rhodes advancing in the 400-meter hurdles (6th),
Victor Peka in the 100 meters (3rd),
Aobakwe Malau in the 400 meters (3rd) and
Dylan DeAngelo posting a personal best in the 400-meter hurdles to earn the final lane in the event.
Those qualifiers join the three Bulldogs who advanced to finals on Friday to help the Bulldogs climb the team standings Sunday during the final day of competition.
