Track & Field Wins Five Events at SDSU Holiday Invite To Open Indoor Season

Ahmed-Green and Priebe set facility records in season opener.

Brookings, S.D. - The Drake University men's and women's track and field teams won five events and had 30 top-five finishes to open the indoor season at the South Dakota State Holiday Invite.

"There were so many top three performances across the board," said Drake head coach Natasha Kaiser-Brown. "It was great to see the hard work in the fall pay off and this should be a fun indoor season."

Rai Ahmed-Green (Irvine, Calif.) had one of the three wins by the women's team with a first-place finish in the 300 meters in 39.98 to set a track record. Sophomore Mary Young (Urbandale, Iowa) got her season off to a strong start after an all-conference season as a freshman. Young won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.59 as the first of three Bulldogs to advance to the finals. Destani Welch (Des Moines, Iowa) was fourth in 8.80 followed by Virginia Hill (Haymarket, Va.) in seventh at 9.08. Hill later won the 300-meter hurdles in 43.57.

In the men's hurdles, sophomore Hudson Priebe (Chamberlain, S.D.) won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 37.87 to shatter the facility record in his home state. He also finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.35.

"The team setting two facility records in our first meet tells us that we're in a good place with this team," Kaiser-Brown said.

Senior Ryan Cook (Colorado Springs, Colo.) opened up his final indoor season by winning the high jump at 6-8. Freshman Forest Moses cleared 6-6 to finish third.

The men's team's sprinters also opened the season with strong performances as Pierce Vincent (Fayetteville, Ga.) was third in the 60 meters (6.90) and second in the 200 meters (22.20). MVC Champion hurdler Kai Asberry (Carrollton, Texas) was third in the 300 meters with a time of 34.89.

The Bulldogs had two competitors in the multi-events with Danielle Griesbaum and Tyler Zak finishing third in the pentathlon and heptathlon, respectively.

"Danielle and Tyler really kicked off the first day of competition with tremendous efforts in their first pentathlon and heptathlon," Kaiser-Brown said.

The Bulldogs will have more than a month until their next competition as the team continues training. The team returns to action following winter break at the Holiday Inn Invite in Lincoln, Neb., Jan. 15-16.
