The Drake University men's and women's track and field teams are set to again face some of the nation's top track and field teams this weekend at the Iowa State Classic on the Harry Hoak Track. The Bulldogs will line up against a combined 22 ranked teams between the men's and women's fields including the likes of Florida, LSU, Virginia Tech.
Action at the Iowa State Classic begins
at 11 a.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday. Last week at the Husker Invitational, the distance runners turned in some of the top performances in school history against top competitors including Arizona State, Auburn, UCLA, Texas, Missouri and Kansas.
Senior
Emma Huston (Des Moines, Iowa) continued her stellar season turning in a personal-best mile time of 4:50.70. Huston's time ranks as the fourth fastest in Drake history and was the second fastest time of the day behind professional Laura Thweatt.
Junior
Reed Fischer (Minnetonka, Minn.) turned in a personal best as well with a time of 8:13.83 in the men's 3,000 meters. Fischer's time also ranked him as the fourth fastest in Drake history, finishing with the third fastest collegiate time against a deep field.
Earlier in the season at the Messermith Invite the Bulldogs posted 33 top-10 finishes spotlighted by
Mary Young's (Urbandale Iowa) second place finishes in the 60-meter hurdles and the 200 meters along with senior
Kayla Bell's (Bolingbrook, Ill.) win the long jump and junior
Bas Van Leersum's win the men's 400 meters.
Following the Iowa State Classic the team will then prepare for the MVC Indoor Championships, which take place Feb. 26-28 at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
