The 2016-17 season featured many thrilling moments and accomplishments for Drake athletics. From conference titles, outstanding team and individual accomplishments, postseason appearances and significant regular season victories, the Bulldogs had plenty to celebrate as they look forward to the upcoming season. Before embarking on 2017-18, www.GoDrakeBulldogs.com will take a look back at the top 10 moments of the 2016-17 throughout the months of June and July.
The No. 2 moment of the 2016-17 season comes from a former tight end for the Drake football team,
Eric Saubert, becoming the first Bulldog since 1983 to be drafted into the NFL. The Atlanta Falcons selected Saubert in the 31
st pick of the fifth round (147 overall) of the National Football League 2017 Draft in Philadelphia.
Saubert finished his career at Drake with 191 receptions for 2,253 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns. He collected four All-America honors in 2016, including the
Associated Press, AFCA, STATS FCS and HERO Sports FCS; as well as three All-America honors in 2015. In addition to his All-America accolades, Saubert was a three-time first-team All-Pioneer Football League selection.
As a senior in 2016, Saubert ranked second among FCS tight ends in the nation in receiving yards per game (70.5) and receiving touchdown (10). He led Drake with a career-best 56 catches for 776 yards receiving.
The 6-foot-5 and 253-pound tight end's speed and agility caught Falcons head coach Dan Quinn's attention, and Saubert continues to impress Quinn and the Falcons after the rookie minicamp.
Check back on July 27 as the No. 1 moment of 2016-17 is unveiled.
