Cross Country Races Creighton To Open The Season

Bulldogs begin 2019 in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. - The Drake University men's and women's cross country teams began 2019 by taking on Creighton in a dual meet with the Bluejays Saturday evening.

Drake's men prevailed over the Bluejays, 22-37, while the Bulldog women were outpaced by Creighton, 23-32.

The women ran a 4-kilometer course at Skutt Catholic High School while the men competed on a 6-kilometer course.

Both teams had more than five runners in the top five of each race with Matt Cozine leading the way by finishing as the second overall runner and first scorer in the men's race. Cozine finished in 18:56.78. He was followed by Xavier Lechleitner in fourth in 19:00.64.

Millie Bretl paced the women's team, finishing the 4-kilometer course in 14:17.23 to take third. Rachel Selva crossed next for the Bulldogs in 14:22.91 to take fifth.

The Bulldogs return to action next Friday with split squads heading to the annual Oz Memorial in Minneapolis, Minn., and the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.
