LINCOLN, Neb. - The Drake University men's and women's track and field teams opened up their 2020 indoor season with a school record in the pole vault and three other performances that are among the top-10 in on Drake's all-time list. 

Those strong performances came on the opening day of the University of Nebraska Graduate Classic at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Friday evening.

Newcomer Maja Gebauer set the tone early for the Bulldogs as the native of Hungary shattered the women's school record in the pole vault by more than eight inches with a clearance of 12-5.5 (3.80m). She tied the eventual winner's height but had one miss at her final height to earn second place. Her mark shattered a record that stood for nearly a decade, besting Johanna Sprang's mark of 11-9 set in 2010.

Other field events saw Joey Harkins unleash a performance in the weight throw of 57-6.25 (17.53m) that ranks second on Drake's all-time list. Harkins finished seventh in the competition while newcomer Ethan Marshall now ranks fifth on Drake's all-time list with a throw of 48-8.75 (14.85m). In the jumps, Cloud Masibhera took second overall and was the top collegiate finisher in the long jump with a leap of 23-11.75 (7.31m).

On the oval, Adam Fogg built off a successful cross country season by winning the 1,000 meters in his first indoor race with a time of 2:28.44. His performance now ranks him 10th on Drake's top-10 list. 

In the longer distances, Kyle Brandt won the 5,000 meters by nearly 40 seconds with a time of 14:56.66 to edge teammate Cole Friedman in second at 15:35.44. Isaac Basten also made the most of his collegiate debut with a third-place showing of 8:35.78 in the 3,000 meters. Sam King posted a personal best of nearly 30 seconds in the same race to take eighth in 8:57.57. 

Xavier Lechleitner and Andrew Berndt also went second and third in the mile in 4:21.25 and 4:21.32, respectively. 

The women's distance crew enjoyed similar success as Olivia Rogers was second in the 3,000 meters in a personal best time of 10:11.89. Millie Bretl trailed closely with her career-best by nearly 15 seconds in 10:24.10. Lindsay Rowatt almost earned a personal best in the mile with a second-place finish of 5:22.98 and Rachel Selva finished second in a two-person 5,000-meter race in 19:40.50.

Drake's women's sprinters also advanced a pair to the finals of the 60 meters as Keaton Kester matched her personal best of 7.88 in her preliminary heat while Mariah Crawford advanced with a time of 7.91. Their times were the second and third fastest qualifying times of the day. 

The return to the track Saturday, along with a collection of Bulldogs in other events, for the final day of the Nebraska Graduate Classic.
