Ajayi Breaks Her Own School Record For The Second Time

Bulldogs set two school records to open up the month of February

LINCOLN, NEB. - The Drake University track and field team finished the weekend with another school record and multiple personal bests during the second day of the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational at the Devaney Sports Center. The Bulldogs also recorded six top-ten finishes in Saturday's events.

"We returned to action and picked up where we left off two weeks ago," said acting Drake head coach Asha Gibson. "Two school records fell again this weekend and the personal bests are continuing to demonstrate the effort of the student-athletes."

Newcomer Yinka Mary Ajayi broke the school record in the women's 200 meters for the third time this season. Ajayi finished with a time of 24.36. She set the school record in the event Jan. 18, broke her own record a week later (Jan. 25), then beat it once again by eight-hundredths of a second Saturday to place ninth in the invitational section of the event.

Xavier Lechleitner was the highest finisher of all the events for the Bulldogs. He placed fourth in the men's 800-meter race, finishing with a time of 1:54.13. The meet featured the Bulldogs' toughest competition of the season to date with nearly 40 schools in attendance, including nearly a half dozen nationally ranked teams.

Keaton Kester competed in the open women's 200 meters, finishing with a personal best time of 25.24. This time places her in the top ten performance list for the Missouri Valley Conference this season. Sophia Jackson and Mariah Crawford also competed in the event. Crawford finished in 26.23, with Jackson not far behind with a time of 26.62.

Lucy Avenson set a new personal best time in the 800 meters, with a time of 2:25.18. She improved her time by more three seconds.

The women's 3,000 meters brought a personal best to two Bulldogs. Millie Bretl finished 13th in 10:14.38 and Elizabeth Aho finished with a time of 10:31.39. Olivia Rogers led the Bulldogs in the event, finishing with a time of 10:03.01 to finish ninth.

"The strides our women's distance program is experiencing can be credited to the investment Jay [Koloseus] has placed in the distance squad."

Maximilian Fridrich recorded an 8:26.03 finish in the 3,000 meters in his first indoor race at the distance. The time bettered his outdoor best by nearly 14 seconds. Kyle Brandt also competed in the event, finishing with a time of 8:38.01

The mile runners finished within three-hundredths of a second of each other. Issac Basten set a personal best in the event, finishing in 4:12.37 and placing 10th. Adam Fogg finished right after in 11th place, with a time of 4:12.40 despite falling during the race.

Victor Peka placed his name in the top-10 for the 200 meter in Drake History. He finished the event in 21.78, placing 14th in the event.

Peka, Angelo Romagna, Joseph Kruse, and Aobakwe Malaubset recorded the fastest time of the season in the 4x400-meter relay for the Bulldogs, finishing in 3:18.25 to place 9th.

The Bulldogs return to action Friday Feb. 14 and Saturday Feb. 15 at the Iowa State Classic at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center in Ames, Iowa.
