Will Tsai became the first Bulldog in 53 years to win a Missouri Valley Conference Championship in the javelin as he carved his name in the annals of Drake history Friday night to open the MVC Championship in Carbondale, Ill.
On the track,
Adam Fogg continued his record-setting season by winning the 10,000 meters in 29:26.28 in his first-ever 10,000 meters. Fogg raced away from the field with the third-fastest time in program history that was just a second shy of the MVC Championship record.
Tsai won his event with a mark of 193-1.75 (60.81m) on his fourth throw that a personal best of nearly 23 feet. His throw ranks sixth all-time in Drake history and is the fourth-best throw since the implement was changed. In addition to being the first Drake javelin champion since Jarrold Bachman in 1968, it is also the first championship in a throwing event at the MVC Outdoor Championship for the Bulldogs since 1992, when Joel Sward won the shot put.
Tsai's historic throw highlighted a fruitful night for the Bulldogs in the throw as
Joey Harkins finished third in the hammer throw at 199-6.25 (60.81m) and
Ethan Marshall uncorked a 14-foot personal best to finish eighth. Marshall's throw of 183-11.25 (56.06m) is the fourth-best in program history.
In the women's throws,
Katelyn Williams strengthened her hold on the school record in the hammer throw by extending the record she already held to 186-11.25 (56.98m) to finish eighth in the event.
In other track events,
Elizabeth Aho continued her strong season with a fourth-place showing in the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:18.83 that ranks fifth all-time at Drake.
Gal Arad posted the fastest qualifying time in the men's 200 meters with a personal best finish of 21.11, a performance that ranks sixth in program history. Fogg started his day by advancing in the 1,500 meters with an easy preliminary heat time of 3:52.66.
Ryan Schweizer also advanced in the event at 3:56.02. Fogg's time was the fourth-fastest of the day, while Schweizer's was 14th.
In the women's 1,500 meters, newcomer
Anastasia Kirillov also advanced with the 10th fastest preliminary heat time of 4:39.85.
The Bulldogs resume action at the MVC Championship Saturday afternoon with another full day of action.
