The Drake University men's and women's track & teams had another historic day at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championship with two more conference titles and four others advancing to the Sunday finals.
The day began with
Cloud Masibhera winning the men's triple jump with a personal best of 49-9 (15.16m). His jump bested the field by nearly a foot and is the fifth-best indoor mark in school history. His indoor triple jump crown is just the third ever by a Bulldog and first since 1988.
Moments later,
Adam Fogg took to the track and set the MVC Championship record in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:06.09 that beat the previous record by more than seven seconds. Fogg's title run came in the first and traditionally slower section of the event and literally competed against only the clock in winning his heat by nearly 43 seconds.
That time was still 20 seconds faster than anyone in the second heat to give him his first MVC title. It also marked the second-straight year the Bulldogs have swept the 3,000 and 5,000-meter races as teammate
Isaac Basten claimed the 5,000-meter crown Friday.
The mile also yielded points and a podium finish for the men as
Ryan Schweizer took third in 4:15.47.
As a result of their efforts, the men enter the MVC Championship's final day in fourth place with 50 points.
The distance events were also productive for the women's team as both
Brooke Mullins and
Ashlee Siegle scored in the 3,000 meters. Mullins, a freshman, finished fourth in 10:00.97 while Siegle, also a freshman, was seventh in 10:10.77.
In preliminary heats on the track, four Bulldogs qualified for finals Sunday, including two in the women's 400 meters.
Yinka Mary Ajayi, the defending champion in the event, cruised in her qualifying heat and posted the second-fastest time of the day at 56.11.
Busiwa Asinga also advanced in 57.81, the fifth-fastest qualifying time.
Those two hope to move the Drake women's team up the team standings as they are in eighth place heading into the final day with 12 points.
For the men, a pair of Bulldogs advanced as newcomer
David Olowookere clocked a qualifying time of 49.83 in the 400 meters that was the third-fastest finish of the day. In the 60 meters,
Victor Peka advanced to the final with a 6.90 finish to earn the event's final lane.
In other field events,
Chandler Haight just missed scoring in the women's shot put as her season-best throw of 46-8.25 (14.23m) was the ninth-best throw in Saturday's final.
The final day of the MVC Championship begins for the Bulldogs Sunday at 11:50 a.m. with the final of the men's 400 meters.
