Distance Crew Climbs Up Rankings At Jim Duncan Invitational

Fogg sets meet record and becomes second Bulldog to run a sub 14-minute 5,000m

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University track and field team turned in another impressive performance at Drake Stadium Friday afternoon for the Jim Duncan Classic.

Both the men's and women's teams won the scored event against competitors from Iowa State, Western Michigan, Omaha, Augustana and Creighton.

Drake's distance runners posted some of the top times in program history with All-American Adam Fogg leading the way in winning the 5,000 meters in 13:58.48. His time shattered the meet record and is the second-fastest time in school history, just 0.17 seconds off Reed Fischer's record pace.

Isaac Basten finished next in 14:19.24 that was also under the previous meet record and the 10th best time in program history.

In the women's distance events, freshman Brooke Mullins finished her first steeplechase race in 10:44.89. That finish is the second-fastest in program history and just 0.45 seconds off Casey McDermott's record pace.

In the shorter distances, Ryan Schweizer won the 800 meters in 1:51.82, a time that resides just outside the top-10 at Drake, while newcomer Gal Arad won the 200 meters and 100 meters. Arad finished the 200 meters in 21.21, the fastest time by a Bulldog in four years.

Drake's women also won the 100, 200 and 400 meters thanks to three personal bests from Keaton Kester (100m – 12.24), Busiwa Asinga (200m – 24.88) and Ellie Mendlik (400m – 58.22)

The Bulldogs also had eight first-place finishes in the field events highlighted by Joey Harkins continuing to improve in the hammer throw with a personal best of 189-2 (57.67m), strengthening his position in third all-time at Drake.

Personal bests also came from Katelyn Williams (Discus – 147-8), Austin Jentz (shot put – 46-0.75 / hammer – 142-11.75)

Drake continues its schedule next week for a two-day competition at the University of Oklahoma.
