DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake Bulldogs produced plenty of positive results at the 115th Drake Relays presented by Xtream powered by Mediacom over the weekend. The Bulldogs' efforts included a pair of victories on the iconic Blue Oval.
Thursday's Relays action had three top 10 finishes for Drake with
Tyla Lumley's 16:22.92 Open 5k, good enough for sixth, and
Aidan Palmer's 14:32.94 Open 5k, good enough for ninth.
Anastasia Kirillov added a seventh-place finish in the women's 10k with a time of 35:27.60.
Chiara Belfico came in after Kirillov in 17th position with a time of 37:43.37.
Bowen Martin and
Ethan Vargas each competed in the Invitational men's 5k with Martin (15:04.75) taking 15th and Vargas (15:12.75) earning 17th.
Drake had three men in the 3000m steeplechase with
Aziz Jdai's 11th-place time of 8:56.28 leading the way.
Lanse Larsen (9:00.73) and
Brendan Cain (9:03.76) finished in 15th and 17th, respectively.
Hannah Kilday posted a 26th-place finish in the women's steeple with a time of 12:18.46.
The first of Drake's two wins came on Friday at Meyer was back on the track in the women's 800. She overcame a less-than-ideal start to lead most of the way and post a 2:03.95. Meyer's win was the first for the Dogs at the Drake Relays since
Brooke Mullins' steeplechase victory two years ago.
Staying on the women's side,
Lara Smits had herself a weekend with two top five results. Smits captured third in the shot put with a throw of 15.15m/49'-8.5" and took fifth in the discus with a throw of 48.35m/158'-7".
The Drake men put together a runner-up team in the University/College 4x1600 relay as
Aidan Ramsey,
Connor Visnic,
Juan Trasobares, and
Brogan Giffin ran 16:58.69. Drake's women's squad added a fourth-place finish in another relay, the 4x200, with a pace of 1:39.57. The Bulldogs' men's 4x200 team finished 24th in 1:30.01.
Juan Trasobares (3:46.74) and
Harrison Martinenko (3:47.14) came in fourth and fifth, respectively, in the men's University/College 1500. Meyer posted another top 10 placement in the women's 1500 in 4:26.58.
Elsewhere on Friday,
Cooper Cerese (16.27m/53'-4.5") and
Ethan Elliott (16.17m/53'-0.75") landed in 11th and 14th in the men's shot put.
Harrison McGregor (49.10m/161'-1"),
Adam Phillips (46.92m/153'-11"), and
Sam Carpenter (46.44m/152'-4") went 16th, 20th, and 21
st in the men's discus.
Dylan DeAngelo rounded out the Bulldog men on the track with a 20th-place 400m hurdles finish in a flat 57 seconds.
The final day of the 115th Relays saw another handful of top 10 finishes by Drake's best, including a 4x400 relay in the University division by the Bulldog team of
Dylan DeAngelo,
Hayden Cross,
Anthony Bradley, and
Drake Dombrosky. That quartet ran a 3:13.24 to take premier honors.
Chinimerem Iwuagwu and
Adam Phillips, two of Drake's top hammer throwers, earned second and third in their respective fields. Iwuagwu was the women's hammer throw runner-up with a launch of 58.14m/190'-9" and Phillips threw his hammer 60.43m/198'-3".
Sam Carpenter (54.81m/179'-10") and
Ethan Elliott (53.21m/174'-7") took 16th and 19th in the men's field while
Lara Smits added a 22nd place mark of 48.62m/159'-6" in the women's contest.
Centaine Noom-Duckworth competed unattached, but still took ninth in the championship women's hammer throw with a heave of 56.56m/185'-7".
Three Drake relay races posted top 10 finishes.
Briandrias Rhodes, Meyer,
Madison Bunton, and
Savannah Ming ran a solid 4x400 relay in the University race to a fourth-place time of 3:47.11. Trasobares,
Gaven Corpin,
Harrison Martinenko, and
Brogan Giffin combined on a sixth-place men's distance medley relay team for a 9:47.46 mark. Dombrosky,
Malachi Collier,
Khalil Kaba, and
Dyer Jarabek ran their sprint medley relay in 3:27.58 to take eighth.
Lastly, Drake collected a pair of 14th-place finishes in the women's sprint medley (4:24.10) via
Leah Duncan,
Reese Mitchell, Emmaline Nau, and
Gracie Shannon, along with
Christopher Norris' javelin throw of 53.25m/174'-8".
The Bulldogs will close their regular season in state with the Musco Twilight in Iowa City on May 3 and Cyclone Twilight in Ames on May 9.
